Helping your Posture with Pillows

Pillows have been our regular companions in bed for centuries, and over the years have proven to be instrumental in helping you attain the ideal sleeping posture.

Posture With Pillows

Pillows can be used in accordance with your favoured sleeping position, and depending on that posture, you should use the appropriate pillow in the correct place. Back sleepers, side sleepers and stomach sleepers need to have different shapes and sizes of pillows beneath various parts of the body.

Back posture

Sleeping on your back is the best position for your spine. In this position you are able to remain in a neutral stance. For sleepers of this posture, a small pillow should be placed under your knees to slightly elevate them. This serves to help your back stay in the optimal position.

Additionally if you favour sleeping on your back, you should use a thin pillow so your head is not pushed too far forward.

Side posture

The side position is favoured with the majority of sleepers. The good thing about this position is that it benefits those sleeping next to snorers, as it lessens the chance of the throat relaxing enough to produce a loud noise. Place a small pillow between your knees to prevent twisting, and to reduce the chances of waking up with lower back pain. You will need a much firmer pillow so that you cover the distance between your ear and outside shoulder.

Stomach posture

Stomach sleepers place the most strain on their bodies as it is difficult for their spines to maintain a neutral position. You can also place strain on your neck, which might explain why you might wake up stiff some days. Instead of placing the pillow beneath your head, try placing it under your stomach to avoid lower back pain.

If you are sleeping on a pillow, make sure it is very thin, although while on your stomach you may not need a pillow at all for your head.

What about the material?

The material for your pillow depends on your personal taste, but it can also help you with the posture that you may want to attain.

Memory foam allows you to have the support you want without the pillow getting too soft. Latex pillows help maintain good neck and back alignment and are also resistant to mould and dust. Wool/Cotton pillows can also be quite firm, additionally they are hypoallergenic. Down/feather pillows have an added flexibility to them because you can manipulate the stuffing to suit your needs; these are considered to be one of the best pillows around.
